When most people hear the word baler, they immediately think of cardboard.
But industrial balers process a much wider range of materials.
These recent pictures are a great example.
This facility is baling a lightweight specialty material that behaves very differently from OCC or paper. The material expands, moves differently through the machine, and presents its own challenges when trying to create a manageable bale.
That’s why there isn’t one baler that’s right for every application.
Start With the Material
At Black River Trading, one of the first things we want to understand is what you’re actually trying to process.
Not simply:
“How many tons per day?”
We want to know:
- What is the material?
- What is its bulk density?
- How does it behave under compression?
- How is it currently collected?
- How will it get into the baler?
- How much material is generated?
- What bale size and weight are required?
- What happens to the bale afterward?
- How much labor is currently involved?
- What problem are you trying to solve?
Those answers matter.
Lightweight and Specialty Materials Create Different Challenges
Look at the material in these pictures.
It doesn’t behave like corrugated cardboard.
Lightweight, springy, bulky, or difficult-to-handle materials can create challenges involving feeding, material retention, bale density, bale integrity, throughput, and handling.
That’s why simply buying a machine with enough compression force doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.
The entire application needs to work.
Sometimes the Existing Baler Is the Right Machine
If you already have a baler processing a specialty material, you don’t automatically need another one.
Maybe the machine needs service.
Maybe it needs adjustments.
Maybe the hydraulic system isn’t producing the performance it once did.
Maybe wear components need attention.
Maybe the feeding method needs to change.
Maybe the operators need additional training.
BRT supports existing recycling equipment with:
- Preventive maintenance
- Baler inspections
- Hydraulic repairs
- Electrical troubleshooting
- Structural repairs
- Cylinder repairs
- Parts
- Controls and sensors
- Operator training
- Equipment upgrades
If the machine still makes sense, our goal is to help you keep getting value from it.
Sometimes the Application Has Outgrown the Baler
There is another possibility.
The material changed.
Production increased.
Labor became more expensive.
The facility added another line.
The existing baler simply can’t keep up.
That’s when it may be time to evaluate another solution.
BRT can help customers compare new and professionally rebuilt recycling equipment based on the actual application.
That may include:
Vertical Balers for lower-volume applications and straightforward material handling.
Closed-Door Balers for industrial applications requiring strong compression and batch processing.
Full-Eject Balers for applications where complete bale ejection and material flexibility provide an advantage.
Auto-Tie Balers for higher-volume operations requiring continuous production and automatic tying.
Two-Ram Balers for demanding applications, multiple commodities, and high-density bale production.
Industrial Shredders when material needs size reduction before baling or downstream processing.
And sometimes, the solution requires more than the primary machine.
Feeding the Equipment Matters Too
A baler can’t perform efficiently if the material can’t get into it properly.
Depending on the application, the complete solution may involve:
- Belt conveyors
- Drag-chain conveyors
- Box dumpers
- Hoppers
- Air systems
- Shredders or hoggers
- Material retainers
- Controls and automation
- Other specialty material-handling equipment
This is why we prefer discussing the system, not simply selling a machine.
New or BRT Rebuilt?
Budget matters.
So does the expected life of the equipment.
For some customers, a new industrial baler provides the best long-term solution.
For others, a properly selected BRT rebuilt baler can provide the required performance at a lower capital investment.
We can help with both.
The important part is selecting the right machine before deciding how much money to invest in it.
Have a Material Nobody Seems to Know What to Do With?
Those are some of our favorite conversations.
Foam.
Textiles.
Plastics.
Paper.
OCC.
Manufacturing scrap.
Recyclable materials.
Specialty materials.
And applications that don’t fit neatly into a category.
BRT covers all material applications.
If you already have a baler and need support, call us.
If you’re trying to determine whether to repair, rebuild, or replace your existing equipment, call us.
And if you’re looking for a new baler, rebuilt baler, shredder, conveyor, or complete recycling system, show us the material and tell us what you’re trying to accomplish.
We’ll start there.
