Tribal Knowledge Isn't a Maintenance Program

Over time, equipment develops issues.

Instead of correcting every one immediately, employees adapt.

They learn which button needs to be pressed again.

Which sensor occasionally needs cleaning.

Which alarm can be reset.

How much material can be loaded before a problem occurs.

Eventually, those workarounds become part of the process.

But they may exist only in someone's head.

Then That Person Leaves

Retirement.

Promotion.

Vacation.

Illness.

Another job.

Suddenly the company discovers that a significant part of its operating procedure was never documented.

The machine didn't change.

The knowledge disappeared.

Training Matters

Operators should understand:

Proper operation.

Daily inspections.

Safety.

Normal machine behavior.

Common warning signs.

When to stop and call maintenance.

Maintenance personnel should understand the equipment they're responsible for supporting.

Fix the Workarounds Too

Training isn't enough if employees are being trained to compensate for broken equipment.

If the same sensor repeatedly fails, address it.

If the hydraulic system isn't performing correctly, diagnose it.

If the auto-tie system constantly requires intervention, determine why.

If the machine is worn beyond reasonable repair, evaluate rebuilding or replacing it.

Don't institutionalize the workaround.

Modern Equipment Can Simplify the Operation

There eventually comes a point when an aging machine has accumulated so many modifications, obsolete components, and workarounds that replacing it deserves serious consideration.

A properly selected new baler can provide modern controls, current safety systems, manufacturer support, parts availability, training, and a known equipment history from day one.

That can reduce the amount of tribal knowledge required simply to keep production moving.

Protect the Knowledge

Ask yourself:

If our most experienced operator didn't come to work tomorrow, could someone else safely and effectively operate this equipment?

If not, that's worth addressing.
